YOUNG LEGISLATORS WANT GORDONS POLL AUTOMATION IN 2007

Young legislators across the country expressed their full support for election automation at the Legislators Assembly convened yesterday by the National Movement of Young Legislators (NMYL).

During the convention, aptly themed Local Legislators: Facing the challenges of the 2007 Elections, the NMYL filed a resolution reiterating their pro stance on automated elections.

The COMELEC had previously declared that nobody wants automation. Yet here is a resolution by the NMYLclearly saying they want it but the COMELEC did not consult their sanggunians, said Senator Richard Gordon, author of the Senate version of the Automated Election Law signed into law in January 2007 and guest speaker at the Assembly.

A successful mock automated elections was conducted during the convention, during which the young legislators experienced first-hand the benefits of an automated system.

The automated election law must be implemented if we are serious in our modernization efforts. Automation will eliminate election fraud like dagdag-bawas. In automation, counting will be prompt, if not instantaneous, and the accuracy of the canvassing will be free of human error, Senator Gordon said.

The sad state of our election process, where the legitimacy of the winners is always questioned, reflects the dire need for modernization through automation. The automated system will give closure to our election after the votes have been counted and winners have been declared. Resources and manpower usually wasted on electoral fraud and protests can be channeled into better public service for the Filipino people, said Senator Gordon.
