Press statement of Sen. Jamby Madrigal

My vote for the abolition of the death penalty was a conscience vote. It was not because of political convenience. As a long time child rights advocate, I joined a rally on January 1999 to show my indignation of a heinous crime committed against a child.

Through the years of its implementation, however, the death penalty has not served its purpose. I believe it did not serve as a deterrent to crime. The death penalty law has only succeeded to show the flaws of our criminal justice system and marginalized further the underprivileged and the poor. My record in the Senate speaks for itself, I advocate the politics of principles and not convenience. I trust that this will set the record straight and avoid further misunderstanding.
