VILLAR: FIRE PROTECTION CAMPAIGNS SHOULD BE INTENSIFIED
The public should cooperate in the campaign to avoid fire incidents this summer

Senator Manny Villar, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Order, urges the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to intensify its fire prevention campaign. At the same time, Villar encourages the public to fully cooperate in various fire-prevention programs to avoid fire incidents from occurring this summer.

"As we celebrate Fire Prevention Month this month, all of us should join hands in ensuring that we will be safe. We all know the tremendous damage that fire brings to not only properties but to the lives and the safety of people as well. Thus, we should work together towards fire prevention," says Villar, President of the Nacionalista Party.

Based on figures from BFP, there were 10,728 fire incidents last year that resulted in the death of 249 people, injuries to 661 people and damages to properties worth around P3.27 billion.

"These figures are really alarming considering the number of families that have been left homeless or lost a family member. We hope these would dramatically decrease this year. Although as of the first week of March this year, there were already 1,672 fire incidents reported that resulted to damages worth over P250,000," adds Villar.

The theme for this year's Fire Prevention Month celebration of BFP is 'Pamayanan Sama-Sama Laban sa Sunog'. Activities such as conduct of industrial and commercial fire drill exercises, conduct of lectures about fire safety, the organization of fire disaster control brigades in barangay among others.

Villar further cites, "We should be more vigilant towards fire prevention and protection during the summer period because it is when most fire incidents are reported. We should take all necessary precautions especially in monitoring and checking electric installations in our houses and building. Even our children should learn about fire safety tips."
