MILITARY UNREST WILL PERSIST AS LONG AS GMA IS IN OFFICE

Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Nene Q. Pimentel, Jr. (PDP-Laban) today said there will be no end to unrest and divisiveness in the military for as long as President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo remains in power and doubts over her legitimacy is not resolved.

Pimentel said the President should accept the reality that her continued stay in office is untenable and is only causing aggravating political instability to the detriment of the Filipinos.

The solution to the crisis is for President Arroyo and Vice President Noli de Castro to resign now so that a snap election can be held to choose a new leader, he said.

The minority leader said the President is merely deceiving herself and the nation by thinking that the problem will go away by resorting to undemocratic means like issuing Executive Order 464, calibrated pre-emptive response and Proclamation 1017 (declaring a state of national emergency).

Gloria has no moral authority to govern. She is the cause of the problem but she can also be the solution to it by resigning. Otherwise, she will be responsible for the spilling of blood on the streets, Pimentel said.
