Press statement of Sen. Jamby Madrigal

It's an ecological disaster. Our country is already in a state of ecological crisis aggravated by La Nina. We are now at the mercy of environmental disasters. The government must now look beyond this disaster and examine its existing policies on the environment. How many more lives must suffer? This tragedy could have been avoided if government had been serious enough on protecting the environment instead of tolerating its plunder.

On Monday, as Chairperson of the Senate Committees of Youth, Women and Children, I shall file a resolution to investigate this tragic incident and to determine the government's preparedness for environmental disasters and rapid climate changes such as La Nina. Women and Children are the most vulnerable sectors of our society, as the incident in Leyte has once again proven.

Our continuing neglect of the environment has not helped. Illegal logging and rampant mining abuses continues unabated. A few years from now, unless the government demonstrates political will to address the serious threats to environment, our country will become a "no man's land".
