Villar questions MWSS on status of wastewater treatment in Metro Manila: Sen. Cynthia Villar, chairperson of the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, asked Atty. Patrick Lester Ng Ty, Chief Regulator, Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System, to explain why 21 years into its concession agreements with Manila Water and Maynilad, Metro Manila has only met 14 percent of its required number of sewerage treatment plants. Villar said the dumping of untreated wastewater in waterways "may lead to an ecological and public health disaster." Under Republic Act 6234, MWSS was given the authority to construct, maintain and operate waterworks and sanitary sewerages in Metro Manila and some areas in Rizal and Cavite provinces.
