NO TO HFCS IMPORTATION: Sen. Juan Miguel F. Zubiri joined protesting sugar workers and plantadores and vowed to protect the sugar industry by calling for strict regulation in the importation of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). "The livelihood of 65,000 planters, 700,000 workers in farms and mills and their combined 5 million dependents nationwide are at great risk if HFCS importation continues unabated," he said. The public hearing on P.S. Res. No 285 jointly filed by Sens. Zubiri and Richard Gordon established the negative effects of unabated HFCS importation as this directly cuts sugar farm household incomes by dampening prices and reducing the demand for workers in farms and mills. Zubiri, Chairman of the Committee on Trade Commerce and Entrepreneurship, said he will look into safeguard measures to strengthen the sugar industry in the face of ASEAN economic integration.
